Ever wondered what journey your milk takes before it reaches your bottle?
We believe that knowing where your food comes from matters, so here is the story of a single litre of our milk from our fabulous cows in the field to the vending machine, ready for you to enjoy at home.
1. Happy Cows Come First
The journey begins not in a bottle, but out in the fields of Woodhorn Farm…
Our cows are at the heart of everything we do. They are cared for daily by our experienced farm team who know the herd individually and prioritise their comfort, health, and wellbeing.
Cows that are well looked after produce better milk – it really is that simple. A diet of homegrown goodness, plenty of fresh water, and a comfortable environment both inside and out, all play a part in producing high‑quality milk. Calm, content cows lead to milk you can trust.

2. Milking Time: Freshness Starts Here
When it’s time to be milked, the cows enter the milking parlour in a calm, routine environment. Milking is carried out using clean, modern equipment designed to be comfortable for the cows and hygienic for the milk.
As soon as the milk leaves the cow, it is rapidly chilled and stored in a temperature‑controlled tank. This is a crucial step – it locks in freshness and quality straight away. Every litre is handled with care from the very first moment.
3. Minimal Miles, Maximum Freshness
One of the biggest differences between farm‑vended milk and supermarket milk is the journey it doesn’t take. There are no long trips to distant processing plants, no waiting in warehouses, and no unnecessary handling.

At Woodhorn Farm, the milk goes a very short distance – from our farm’s pasteurising facility directly to our on‑site milk vending machines less than a mile away at the Oving Jubilee Hall and also at Berries on Tap in Sidlesham.
Fewer miles mean fresher milk, a longer natural shelf life, and a much smaller environmental footprint.
4. Gently Pasteurised, Nothing Else Added
Before reaching the vending machine, the milk is pasteurised on site at the farm. Pasteurisation gently heats the milk to remove harmful bacteria while keeping its natural goodness intact.
What doesn’t happen is just as important:
- No homogenisation
- No additives
- No unnecessary processing
The cream may naturally rise to the top – that’s a sign you’re getting real, minimally processed milk, just as nature intended.
5. The Milk Vending Machine: Fresh, Simple, Refillable
Once pasteurised, the milk is transferred into our milk vending machines, where it’s kept chilled and ready for our customers to dispense directly into your own container or a reusable glass bottle purchased on site.

By choosing to refill you are:
- Reducing plastic waste
- Supporting local farming
- Taking home the freshest milk that may have been in the cow only hours earlier
It doesn’t get much fresher than that.
6. From Our Farm to Your Fridge
From the moment you fill your bottle, the last step of the journey is yours. Take your milk home, give it a shake if the cream has risen, and enjoy it however you like – on cereal, in tea or coffee, or simply by the glass.
Every litre tells a story of local farming, care for animals, and a commitment to quality over convenience.
Why This Journey Matters
In a world of long supply chains and anonymous products, we think transparency is key. When you buy milk from Woodhorn Farm, you’re not just buying milk, you’re buying into a way of farming that values:

- Animal welfare
- Environmental responsibility
- Community connection
- Honest, great‑tasting food
